The Nightmare (after Henry Fuseli)
After doing my Nigel Farage having a wrong’un illustration, I thought I’d have a crack at another nightmarish image. This one is based on the oil painting by Anglo-Swiss artist Henry Fuseli featuring a goblin sat ontop of a lady in bed, with a mad horse having a cackle in the background.
Erasmus Darwin wrote a short poem about it:
So on his Nightmare through the evening fog Flits the squab Fiend o’er fen, and lake, and bog; Seeks some love-wilder’d maid with sleep oppress’d, Alights, and grinning sits upon her breast.
Brian Sewell said of this version:
“She looks like shes having a right melt.”
You can’t argue with that.
