The Gluten Free Kitchen is a bakery based in Leyburn, North Yorkshire who make gluten, dairy, wheat and egg free cakes, savouries and pastries that are delivered frozen to customers doors. Their products are aimed at people with food allergies like those with coeliac disease or who are on a particular diet. They have already won a few Foods Matters awards and been featured in BBC Good Food Guide and on the Channel 4 food website.
Although it’s still hard to find where to buy gluten free food as it’s still not stocked by a great amount of shops, more and more are starting to sell products for people with food allergies. Some of the Gluten Free Kitchen products are now stocked by Waitrose up and down the UK and smaller independent shops in the North of England. Gluten free food and diets does seem to be a hot topic at the moment, with just as many people trying to discredit it as a fad as there are of those proclaiming its health benefits.
I spent time with chef and baker Sue Powell and partner Dave Fleming at their place for an initial shoot of various products including Chicken and Bacon Pie, Goats Cheese and Red Onion Tart and Ovencrust bread. I also shot the existing packaging for their Apple Crumble and other pudding products. A few months later I shot a few follow ups to expand on the range that they already stocked like the Carrot Cakes and Voakes Gluten Free Pork Pies.
